50pc Yamato Do-Dai

Hand-Lacquered Fiber Do-Dai

LEAD TIME: Approx. 3-4 Weeks depending on finish.

Each of these Do-Dai are individually hand-painted, so no two dos are the same! Our hand-lacquered fiber Do-Dai have an opening of approximately 38-39cm but are adjustable by about a centimeter to ensure a comfortable fit.

Bamboo Do-Dai

California Budogu collaborates directly and indirectly with some of Japan’s most esteemed Do-Dai lacquering specialists, including Tachibana, Joubouji, and others. Each piece is meticulously hand-lacquered over several months, offering unique characteristics from each artisan. If you have a specific bamboo Do-Dai in mind, we can often source the exact design or craft a custom one from scratch. For inquiries, please contact us at info@californiabudogu.com.

Our bamboo Do-Dai typically features an opening size between 35-45 cm. While you can specify a precise opening, please allow for slight variation (up to 1 cm). Custom sizes outside this range are also available upon request.

Kiji Do-Dai

LEAD TIME: Approx. 1-2 Months depending on finish.

Kiji Do are by far one of the best options for those looking for a truly unique look. The surface of each Kiji Do is covered with a layer of opaque natural cowhide. In general, this cowhide is either un-lacquered or finished with a layer of clear Urushi - exemplifying the beauty of each Kiji Do’s natural characteristics and “imperfections”. Cloth may be placed under the cowhide (e.g. Kon-Kiji or Aka-Kiji), or the cowhide itself may be dyed for a splash of color.

Due to the nature of the material, no two Kiji Do can be the same, and no exact finish can be guaranteed. California Budogu offers a huge variety of Kiji Do types, so please feel free to contact us for any other styles or shades you may be looking for!

Bamboo Do-Dai

LEAD TIME: Approx. 3-6 Months depending on finish.

Our 60pc bamboo Do-Dai, finished with authentic Urushi lacquer, brings a touch of luxury and craftsmanship to any Bogu set. While our website showcases a broad range of colors and designs, customization options are almost limitless when it comes to Bamboo Do-Dai!

Genuine Sakuragawa Do-Dai

LEAD TIME: Approx. 3-6 Months depending on finish.

Artisan-crafted 60pc bamboo Do-Dai is layered with genuine Sakuragawa, or cherry blossom bark, a rare and traditional art form from the skilled craftsmen of Akita Prefecture in Northeastern Japan. Known for its intricate and natural aesthetic, Sakuragawa is a celebrated Japanese folk art, often used in high-end items and slowly becoming a vanishing skill.

With very few artisans left capable of creating a full Sakuragawa Do-Dai, California Budogu is proud to be the only Bogu shop in the United States—and one of the few worldwide—to offer such an exquisite and unique piece. Each Do-Dai is layered with carefully arranged pieces of cherry blossom bark, giving it a one-of-a-kind texture and appearance. Due to the organic nature of the material, no two Sakuragawa Do-Dai are identical, making each piece truly unique.

For specific customization requests, please contact us, and we will communicate directly with the craftsmen to accommodate your requests.

Note: This Do-Dai is crafted from genuine cherry blossom bark, and with repeated use, minor chipping may occur. However, unlike standard Do, Sakuragawa Do-Dai can be sent back to the artisans for restoration, with new bark pieces added as needed. With proper care, this Do can easily last a lifetime.

Genuine Samegawa

LEAD TIME: Approx. 3-6 Months depending on finish.

Our 60pc bamboo Do-Dai, finished with a luxurious layer of genuine Samegawa, is available in a wide range of styles, colors, and finishes. Samegawa has been prized in Japanese craftsmanship for centuries, valued for both its stunning natural texture and remarkable durability. Traditionally used in high-end sword fittings, Samegawa has long been appreciated for its unique combination of strength and beauty.

Samegawa is considered one of the most luxurious materials in the Budogu industry. For the last few decades, nearly ALL Same Do have been produced outside of Japan.
While our standard “overseas” Same Do are still very beautiful, California Budogu is extremely proud to be the ONLY Bogu shop in the United States (and one of the few in the entire world) able to source 100% Made-in-Japan Same Do-Dai.

When you choose the Made-in-Japan option, our skilled artisan even allows you to select your preferred rayskin pelt before production, ensuring each Do-Dai is uniquely tailored to you.

Please note that actual colors may vary slightly from images. If you'd like a closer look, feel free to reach out— we’d be happy to provide more detailed Do-Dai images if available!
